Parallel Health Is Now In-Network with Blue Shield of California
by Parallel Health Team
Precision skin microbiome care is now covered for millions more Californians — here's what that means for you.
🎉🎉🎉
Big news! Parallel Health has officially joined the Blue Shield of California provider network. That means if you're a Blue Shield member in California, you can now access our MD-03 Protocol™, which includes whole-genome skin microbiome sequencing, Metabolic Microbiome Profiling™, personalized phage serums, and clinician-prescribed formulations, as an in-network benefit.
Combined with our existing partnerships with Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, Parallel Health is now in-network with four of California's largest commercial insurers, collectively covering more than 28 million Californians.
Why This Matters
More than 86 million Americans are living with inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and many others that have well-established connections to the skin microbiome. HS alone, a painful and often underdiagnosed inflammatory condition affecting the skin follicles, impacts an estimated 1 million Americans who, on average, wait 7 years for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Many of these patients have cycled through topical after topical, prescription after prescription — treatments that weren't designed around their biology. That's not a failure of medicine. It's a gap in the tools available to clinicians. Until now, the infrastructure to routinely decode the skin microbiome simply hasn't existed in a clinical setting.
Parallel Health has spent years building that infrastructure: the sequencing pipeline, the microbial biobank, the prescribing protocols. We built it because we believe the microbiome holds answers that conventional diagnostics can't yet see.
What the Skin Microbiome Can Tell Us
Your skin is home to trillions of microorganisms — bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea — that collectively shape your skin health, barrier function, and immune response. When that ecosystem falls out of balance, the downstream effects can look like acne, chronic inflammation, or conditions like HS that are notoriously difficult to treat.
"The skin microbiome is one of the most informative windows into why skin breaks down, and we've just begun to scratch the surface technologically and clinically," said Nathan Brown, PhD, Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer of Parallel Health. "Being in-network with Blue Shield means we can reach patients who have been cycling through, often broad-spectrum, often failed, treatments. Precision care shouldn't be a luxury. This is how we start to make it the standard."
How Parallel Health Works
When you become a patient, you receive a sequencing kit at home. Your skin microbiome sample is analyzed through our microbial genomic pipeline, generating a detailed picture of what lives in your skin's microbial ecosystem and how it may be contributing to what you're experiencing.
From there, one of our board-certified dermatologists reviews your results and builds a care plan tailored to your unique skin microbiome. That may include a customized phage serum — phages are precision nano-microbes that selectively target and neutralize harmful bacteria on the skin without disrupting the beneficial microbiome — or a personalized prescription formulation compounded in-house and delivered directly to your door.
Dr. Seaver Soon, Head of Dermatology at Parallel Health and a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, put it plainly: "Two patients with the same diagnosis can have completely different microbial profiles and completely different outcomes. Now we have the infrastructure to act on that knowledge at scale. Blue Shield's network allows us to bring that level of precision to far more patients."
A Signal the Healthcare System Is Catching Up
For Natalise Kalea Robinson, Co-Founder and CEO of Parallel Health, joining the Blue Shield network carries meaning beyond the coverage expansion itself.
"Insurance coverage is the on-ramp to precision medicine for most patients," she said. "Joining the Blue Shield network is a signal that the healthcare system is ready to invest in identifying why patients have the conditions they have, not just managing symptoms. We're proud to be the company making that possible in dermatology."
