Holy Basil for Skin and Stress: Why It's in the Holy Calming Cleanser™

by Parallel Health Team

What Is Holy Basil?

Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum, also called Ocimum sanctum or tulsi) is an aromatic plant in the mint family with more than 3,000 years of use in Ayurvedic practice. Its leaves contain eugenol, rosmarinic acid, ursolic acid, and linalool, compounds studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity (Cohen, 2014).

What Does Research Say About Holy Basil and Stress?

Holy basil is classified as an adaptogen, a plant thought to help the body respond to physical and emotional stress. A systematic review of 24 human studies found favorable effects on stress, metabolic, and cognitive outcomes, with no significant adverse events reported (Jamshidi & Cohen, 2017).

The strongest recent evidence comes from an 8-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial. After eight weeks, perceived stress decreased by 37% in participants taking a holy basil extract, compared to a 19% decrease in the placebo group, and insomnia scores decreased by 48% versus 27% with placebo (Lopresti et al., 2022). An earlier double-blind trial also reported significant improvement in general stress symptoms (Saxena et al., 2012).

While the findings above come from oral supplements, we chose holy basil for a cleanser because the evidence points to an idea that we stand behind and dermatology research supports: calm and skin recovery are connected.

Why Stress Matters for Your Skin Barrier

The link between mood and skin is well documented. Researchers found that psychological stress during exam periods slowed the skin's ability to repair its barrier (Garg et al., 2001). A separate study showed that sleep deprivation and social stress delayed barrier recovery in healthy women (Altemus et al., 2001). Supporting calm is part of supporting skin, especially when that skin is healing.

Why Holy Basil Is in the Holy Calming Cleanser™

We designed the Holy Calming Cleanser™ to repair the skin barrier; it's also especially helpful for the days after laser or in-office treatments, when the skin barrier is recovering, and many patients feel anxious about how their skin looks. Holy basil earns its place for two reasons.

First, its plant compounds bring antioxidant properties to a gentle, low-irritation formula. Second, cleansing can be a short, intentional pause in the day. After a procedure, a gentle routine that feels soothing gives you a few minutes to slow down while your skin recovers. Holy basil's long history as a calming herb, paired with a soft, non-stripping formula, is meant to support that ritual.

The result is a cleansing experience that respects healing skin and supports a calmer routine, morning and night.

How to Use It After Treatment

Follow your provider's post-procedure instructions first. Cleanse with lukewarm water, massage gently without scrubbing, pat dry, and follow with a barrier-supporting moisturizer.

FAQ

What does holy basil do for skin? Holy basil contains rosmarinic acid, ursolic acid, and eugenol, plant compounds studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity (Cohen, 2014). In skincare, it's used to complement gentle formulas that help protect and soothe the skin, especially when the barrier is under stress.

Can a holy basil cleanser lower cortisol? Holy basil has been shown to reduce perceived stress in clinical trials, and some of its plant compounds can absorb into the skin. Those studies used oral extracts, though, and topical effects on cortisol haven't been studied yet. What the Holy Calming Cleanser™ offers is a gentle, barrier-respecting cleanse and a few calm minutes built into your day, right when healing skin needs it most.

Is it safe after laser treatment? The Holy Calming Cleanser™ is dermatologist approved for post-treatment use. Always check with your provider before resuming any routine.
