Are You Eating Deli Meats? Beware: They Might Be Contaminated.
by Parallel Health Team
If you’ve been savoring deli meats recently, you might want to think twice before taking another bite.
Boar’s Head has just significantly expanded its recall of ready-to-eat deli meats, adding an additional 7 million pounds to the previous recall due to a serious listeria outbreak. Listeria is caused by a bacterium called Listeria monocytogenes, and can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, elderly individuals, and people with weakened immune systems. It can cause severe symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, and potentially life-threatening complications that may not manifest until up to 10 weeks after consuming contaminated food.
This massive recall now encompasses 71 products produced at a Virginia facility between May 10 and July 29, including items under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brands. This decision follows an earlier recall of over 200,000 pounds of deli meats.
The outbreak has had dire consequences, resulting in three deaths and 43 illnesses across 13 states. The initial alarm was raised when a liverwurst sample collected in Maryland tested positive for listeria, and subsequent investigations confirmed that this strain of the bacteria was linked to the reported illnesses.
In response, Boar’s Head has ceased production at the affected plant and advised consumers to discard or return any recalled products immediately. Given that listeria can thrive in refrigerated environments, the CDC recommends you thoroughly clean and sanitize your refrigerator to prevent further contamination.
